A heat and thunderstorm warning is in effect for Wednesday and Thursday in Austria, according to GeoSphere Austria. In places, there may be severe thunderstorms with storms, hail and heavy rain.
The year’s first heat wave brings this week widespread over 30 degrees. Especially on Wednesday and Thursday, temperatures around 35 degrees are possible. In addition, there is very high humidity (sultriness), which increases the heat load, as informed by Geosphere Austria.
Storm and hail: Thunderstorm warning for Wednesday and Thursday
In the muggy air, strong thunderstorms can develop in places on Wednesday and Thursday, with heavy rain, storms and hail. In addition, during the night on Friday, a cold front will move through from west to east, with showers and thunderstorms, some of them heavy.
Friday will bring changeable weather, in the western half of Austria, it will already be significantly more relaxed, with highs between 18 and 25 degrees. In the east and south, 27 to 31 degrees are expected, and thunderstorms are possible.
35 degrees in June were much rarer in the past
“That 35 degrees are reached in June, occurs in Austria since the end of the 1990s every one to two years,” said climatologist Alexander Orlik of GeoSphere Austria. “In the past, this was much rarer. From the 1950s to the mid-1990s, there was an average of 35 degrees or more in a June in Austria only every five years.”
The highest temperature recorded in June in the GeoSphere Austria measurement network was 38.6 degrees, on June 20, 2013, in Waidhofen a der Ybbs in Lower Austria. The earliest 35 occurred on May 30, 2017, in Horn in Lower Austria.
